52 week project 7/25

52

It was a trying week for me as Gremlin brought in his first bird.
I'm not sure there are words to describe how I felt but many tears were shed for this little bird.

"A Portrait of Gremlin, once a week, every week for the rest of the year"

I needed to hear from others that this is a natural instinct for gremlin before I could even look at him. I also found it difficult to forgive myself as I felt like I had been responsible for this little birds life. I guess we're all only human and from this experience I've tried to rectify some of the mistakes I made as a cat owner. I've now moved his curfew back from before night fall to now before dusk as I was reading dawn and duck are the most vulnerable time for birds as this is when they feed. I bought a collar with a bell on it and as he just turned 6 months I've booked him in for desexing to limit any sort of aggression.

I'm also completely hypocritical as I'm not a vegetarian myself. I've had some heart to heart chats with gremlin and hopefully he understand I'm a complex human. I'd love to hear others experiences with their cats bringing in animals, it honestly impacted me far greater than I had ever imagined it would have :(

  1. I love this picture. He looks like some sort of exotic bird, with his big poofy tail.

As far as cats hunting, both of our cats are indoor cats, so other than the odd green bean, we don't tend to find much "prey" in the house. However, my parents' cats were hunters. Only one of them only ever stole blue socks, which was adorable and much less horrifying than the decapitated birds the older one would sometimes leave on our doormat.

    1. I've been reading a lot about the different indoor/outdoor cat benefits it seem quite controversial and everyone has reasons for their choice but it definitely makes me question having him outdoors - I'll see how the new steps go over the next few week, so far so good, so I'll keep my fingers crossed :) I really wish he stole blue socks!!!!!

  2. This urge to hunt may not ever disappear, even after the operation...Tone,that lives with my parents hunts everything that he can - although we see them as 'domestic', cats are little lions and i think you should let him go outside if you have a safe place to hang out outside the house.
I also feel sad for the birds Tone and other cats i had brought home (less sad for the rats and insects ahaha) but the good side is that by bringing it home it's a gift and an acknowledgment of you as his provider, his mother figure <3 it's a sign of love, like when they blink their eyes, cats only do that when they love people!

    1. Thanks for saying that Sara - I guess I viewed it super violently and not as a gift. I was just super upset by the whole thing. I think the bell collar and shortening how long he is out has/will help things. If it became a regular occurrence I think I would have to transition him to be an inside cat. Just going to play it all by ear. In my head I love that their little lions but the reality was super shocking for me. I'm always learning!

    2. i have seen animals being slaughtered since i was 2 years old,in the farm,i can understand how it is shocking and upsetting - i do not eat any animals of the farm, never ate duck or sheep, stopped eating rabbit at 9 and just very rarely have a taste of pork or cow beef because i was so impressed and shocked with the way animals go...i always say i am not a vegetarian because i'm lazy, although many of my friends are vegetarians and some of them are even vegan.
I appreciate loving naturally raw food and not having to deal with dead animals in the kitchen..
because my father raises canaries, sometimes, when they die,he offers them to Tone to play and after he plays he always brings it underneath my bed 0_O
It upsets me but i just try to see it has something of it's nature - my mother was way more upset with rats and snakes at the kitchen's door ahaha
but if you feel he is happy inside the house and he enjoys his walks with the leash, maybe it is the best solution for you :)

    3. Thanks Sara for all your insights - I'm going to see how the next two weeks play out and then maybe just have supervised outdoor sessions. I talked with Ben and we're on the same page. I definitely need to look at my own animal consumption as well, it is nature, the animal kingdom, the food chain but I guess maybe I've been extremely sheltered from it all - I wonder how I would be if I grew up on a farm myself? So much to think about (I always over think everything) :P
