Tama the Station Cat Master

source 1 / 2
That's Tama the cat on the right and over on the left her train!  Yup Tama is the official 'Super Station Master' at Kishi Station, Wakayma (Japan) since 2007.

In 2010 the station under went a cat transformation, all thanks to Tama's fame and popularity :)

So how did a cat end up being a Station Master? Well according to the badly translated Japanese Wiki page.  Miko, Tama's Mother, was a stray cat living in a warehouse on the south side of the station.  Miko gave birth to Tama and her orange tabby sister Chibi (above left) who then got adopted by the station :)  Tama's popularity grew and now, not only does she have her own themed train but their is a small museum inside the station, a cafe, and cat themed buses! Super cool!  Unfortunately Mamma cat Miko passed away in July 2009 :(

"Super Station Master Room!" love it! Apparently that cap, Tama wears, took 6 months to create and she's only asked to wear it for "official duties".  On a random side note, that strawberry mat she's sitting on, is in honour of the region's strawberry picking farms.  The Wakayma electric railway actually has two other themed trains a strawberry train and a toy train, which I'd also love to ride in!

How amazing is the inside of the Tama train!!

I love that in Japan there's no fear of having beautiful train interiors :)  I don't think cute interiors like this would last too long on public transport in Australia :(

Tama even rides the train which was constructed in 2009.  Tama has her own little designated area but only appears on select days and hours, so if you want to go make sure you do your research first!

On January 5th, 2012, the fifth anniversary of Tama being station master, "Nitama" (literally translating to 'Second Tama') was appointed to relieve Tama of some of her responsibilities.  It seems according to the Wakayma site Tama is on duty Tues-Thurs at Kishi station 10-4pm whilst Nitama does Mon, Tues, Fri at Idakiso Station and Sat, Sun and Public holidays at Kishi 10-4pm.  Yikes, heavy work schedule though to be honest most of the pictures I saw on the net are of the cats sleeping :P
